Generac standby power

When the storm takes the line down, the lights stay on.

Mid-Michigan is, in Revolution Electric’s words, a place of “the constant poor weather that always seems to knock out power.” A Generac standby generator starts by itself and carries the well pump, the sump pump, the furnace and the fridge until the line comes back.

Called him just after 6 pm while he was out to dinner and maybe a half hour later he was at my front door. Worked away in the dark and had us up again in about an hour. Very friendly guy

If there was more than 5 stars I would definitely give it. We had our power hooked up to 3 barns on our property as well as several new outlets and rewiring. This would have cost a fortune anywhere else. He was very honest in what we needed to replace and what was in good working order for now. So glad we found this guy. Would highly recommend him and plan on using him again in the future. Great prices and really great service. Thanks!!!

Steve was prompt, gave a reasonable quote, had the work done quickly (repairing a downed power line/damaged by a tree), and helped with inspection follow-up. Highly recommend.

We hired Revolution Electric a couple of years ago to install several light fixtures and added some switches and a ceiling fan at our home in Midland. Steve is great to work with. Prompt, professional and honest. He is very fair with his pricing and did everything he said he would. On time and on budget. We are now building a cottage up north and I have had nothing but the usual run around from “local” electricians. They don’t call back, they don’t listen to what you want. I called to see if Revolution Electric would be willing to do the electrical on our new 1340 sq. ft. cottage (even though it’s a quite a drive) and Steve said yes! I’m so happy to have Revolution Electric working on our cottage! I didn’t feel good about anyone else I found up around Torch Lake area. I know we will be happy using this company again. THE BEST!

I almost hate to share this as he may not be available next time I need him! Yet Revolution is by FAR the best experience I have EVER experienced with any HVAC/Electrical support in my life after having dealt with numerous homes in Michigan to Texas to South Carolina. Steve tells me one thing and then FAR exceeds my expectations every time! I cannot say enough good things, just PLEASE don’t take my electrician away from me!!!! :) Thanks!!!!!!!

I was stranded on the side of the road for over an hour and these two gentlemen were the only two to stop and ask if everything was alright. Good character guys do good work. Thanks again! God bless you

Local knowledge

What Mid-Michigan houses ask of their wiring.

  1. Century homes

Downtown Alma, Ithaca, St. Louis and St. Johns have houses from the late 1800s and early 1900s, rewired piece by piece. Expect a mix of eras behind the walls, and the odd fuse box.

  2. Basements & sump pumps

Michigan houses sit on basements, and many of those basements depend on a sump pump. An outage during a spring storm is when that matters most.

  3. Wells, barns & long runs

Out in the townships the water comes from a well pump and the work is spread across barns, sheds and shops, which means feeders, boring and direct burial.

  4. Storms & ice

Summer thunderstorms, wind and winter ice bring lines down. Rural lines can be among the last restored, which is why standby generators are so common here.

Straight answers

Electrical questions, answered.

What should I do if I smell burning or see sparks from an outlet or panel?

If you can do it safely, turn off that circuit’s breaker or the main breaker, then call an electrician. If there is smoke or fire, get everyone out and call 911.

What is a standby generator and how is it different from a portable one?

A standby generator is permanently installed outside the house, runs on natural gas or propane, and starts by itself through an automatic transfer switch when the utility power fails. A portable generator has to be wheeled out, fueled with gasoline and connected by hand.

How do I know if my home needs a service upgrade?

Signs include a full panel with no spaces, breakers that trip under normal use, a fuse box or a 60- or 100-amp service, and plans to add big loads such as a generator, central air, an EV charger, a shop or an addition.

Can any light fixture box hold a ceiling fan?

No. A ceiling fan has to hang from a box that is listed and marked for fan support, fastened to the framing. An ordinary light box can loosen and let the fan fall.

What is directional boring and when is it used?

Directional boring drills a path underground and pulls conduit or cable through it, so a run can pass under a driveway, sidewalk, lawn or landscaping without digging a trench across it. Only small pits are dug at each end.

Who licenses electricians in Michigan?

Electrical contractors and electricians in Michigan are licensed through the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), Bureau of Construction Codes. You can look up a license on LARA’s website.
